Answers by Craig Blockley, Drummer and Vocals:
You’ve all been on the music scene before in previous bands, but how did you meet, and how was the band formed?
It was fate! We found our drummer on ‘Join My Band’ and then we found the bassist through a friend. We all get on great thankfully!
There’s clearly a story behind ‘Jimmy Amnesia’, but how did you come up with the name and what does it all mean?
Jimmy was a musician in the 60s and 70s. He lived a very extravagant lifestyle leading him to forget his name hence, Jimmy Amnesia. Jimmy hadn’t been seen since 1974, and our band is a tribute to the legend that is Jimmy.
Talk to me about the music writing process and how you create music as a band. Is it something you do collectively, or does each member bring their own ideas to the table?
We all bring ideas in and then we add to it, but most of the time we have a few beers and just enjoy jamming and don’t stress to much, you can’t force something like that.
Who are your inspirations and how do you draw upon them?
Our idols are, Elton John, John Fashanu and Jimmy.
Musically our inspirations would probably be Oasis, James, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters and QOTSA. Our inspirations aren’t intentional it’s just what we like, we’d say that these bands just loved to play music as much as we do and we’re just doing the same as they did when they first started.
As an up-and-coming band that also has day jobs, how easy is it to find time promote your music, perform at gigs and rehearse?
We make it happen and we enjoy it so it’s a break from everyday life. We all like a beer so we’re easily persuaded to perform gigs!
Leicester has a lot of history when it comes to musicians that come from the city, and even venues that were graced by a many famous names. What are your thoughts on the music scene in Leicester now that a lot of these venues have disappeared, and where do local bands head to perform?
It was slow but it’s getting better as the years go on. There are plenty of places to play; we’ve recently performed at The Sound House and The Phantom in Loughboroigh.
Where has been your favourite venue to play and why?
When we played The Phantom in Loughborough it was outside and we played to new people which is always a challenge.
What’s the ultimate aim for the band? Are you just enjoying jamming and playing music together, or are you hoping for bigger things?
We want to be as good as we possibly can and make Jimmy proud!
Where can we listen to your music online?
Are there any plans to release an EP or album in the near future?
Yes, hopefully very soon! We are currently recording songs when we can.
