Help celebrate the NHS this Christmas

Wednesday 4th November 2015

November is here which means we can now officially talk about Christmas, and whether you’re a big fan or happy to let it pass by quietly, it’s never too early to consider who might be Christmas Number 1.

With X Factor viewing figures at an all time low, and The Antiques Roadshow racking up more viewers than the Sunday night X Factor Results Show, could this mean that less people will purchase the winners single? Only time will tell, but what we do know is with the X Factor Final taking place on the 13th December, the winners single will make its chart debut on the 18th December. This means that the spot for Christmas Number 1 is wide open, with the official Christmas Number 1 being reveled on Christmas Day.

This year sees a new campaign in the running, set up by Dr Harriet Nerva, Dr Katie Rogerson and Joe Blunden to help get the NHS to Number 1. In 2013 the Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir recorded their single ‘A Bridge Over You’, which was released to mark the 65th anniversary of the NHS. It is a mix-up of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’. With the winter months looming and the NHS facing more pressures, they are hoping to get the single to Christmas Number 1 this year.

The NHS faces a cruel winter ahead. Budget cuts, low staff morale, junior doctors balloting for industrial action, and hospitals up and down the country being classed as ‘inadequate’. We are closer than ever to that cliff edge, but we WILL NOT let the NHS fall.”

All money raised from the single will be going to NHS healthcare charities, although it has not been decided which charities yet, but they will be UK wide. There has been talk on the Facebook group of asking those who purchase the single where they would like the proceeds to go, but all charities will be confirmed before the 19th December.

The video for the single can be viewed on YouTube and the single purchased from iTunes, but they are asking people not to buy the single until the 19th December, so they have a better chance of reaching that Number 1 position.

If you would like to show your support for the campaign now, you can add your signature to Thunderclap, which will post a one-time message to your social media account on the 19th December. They have reached 20% of their target so far with over a month still to go.
